A informative gentle reminder on staying focused on what really counts in learning to play jazz.

  1. Learn tunes: he suggests 25 standards
  2. Immersive listening: creating playlists of these tunes and playing them constantly
  3. Working on time: no time, no jamming, no gigs
  4. Learning to play in different situations: duo, trio, big band, with singers and more
  5. Worrying about gear. As a drum student, this was an expensive lessons. Piano students suffer less from this malady.
To which I would add Wynton Marsalis' commands to please learn to play your instrument.
